Notes for the journey

Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama: tours & border

The Uyuni–San Pedro crossing combines the salt flat with the altiplano and an international finish. It is not a quick transfer: expect several days of scenery, remote nights and a final border connection that needs to be explicit.

Updated

The short answer

Three days from Uyuni can continue to Chile; four from San Pedro can include the Chile return. Check the exact final destination.

One way, round trip and confusing names

On Experiences t801011 travels from Uyuni toward San Pedro in three days; White & Green t774308 starts and finishes in San Pedro over four. These differ in salar timing, border day and rest opportunities. Match every overnight and transfer to your next booking. A salt-flat photograph does not tell you which direction the vehicle travels.

What the circuit involves

The researched routes combine salar, villages, lagoons, deserts, geysers or hot springs according to the itinerary. On Experiences lists a salt hostel and Laguna Colorada refuge, with different room and bathroom arrangements. Ask about heating, showers, electricity and sleeping elevation for each night. A photograph of one hotel does not establish the next refuge’s facilities.

The border is not the last transfer

Establish where the Bolivian vehicle stops, who meets you after processing and which transfer reaches San Pedro. Keep that final contact. Check entry documents for your nationality; agency assistance does not guarantee admission. Published arrival times are indicative, and slow processing can compromise a bus or flight booked for the same afternoon.

Compare total cost and baggage

Offers read on 20 October started at €369 for t801011 and €314 for t774308; they price different formats rather than identical journeys. Add excluded admissions, drinks, equipment and nights outside the circuit. Ask about baggage capacity and storage. Leave arrival and acclimatization time before entering a remote route.

Compare the four researched formats

The catalog contains two three-day Uyuni-to-Chile products and two four-day departures that return to San Pedro. At the 20 October check, TRIP BOLIVIA t1433111 started at €328 and On Experiences t801011 at €369; White & Green t774308 started at €314 and Inspires t877131 at €384. These are public starting offers, not a quote for your group or chosen date.

The lower number does not identify the better route. A return from San Pedro involves another border crossing and a different order of landscapes; an arrival in Chile can replace an onward transfer but leaves you in a different town from where you began. Choose the direction before comparing the cost. Also verify the language of the selected option: a bilingual product page does not make every driver bilingual.

Rooms, warmth and luggage are part of the decision

For t801011 the description distinguishes a first-night salt hostel, normally double or triple rooms with private bathrooms, from a second-night Laguna Colorada refuge with a shared dormitory and shared bathroom. It allows room assignments to vary with availability. That is more useful information than a generic promise of comfortable accommodation. Ask what room your party actually receives and whether you can book a different arrangement.

The same listing names a sleeping bag from May to September. That does not establish a year-round bag, working heating, hot showers or electricity all night. Ask about the bedding for your date, warmth at each property, charging periods, shared facilities and how any special requirements can be met. Keep an accessible small bag for the first night rather than needing to unpack every suitcase at each arrival.

Before payment establish the number and size of bags the shared vehicle can carry, how they are protected and whether valuables stay inside. If you are returning to the same town, storage of surplus luggage needs an actual arrangement. If you are crossing one way, a suggestion to leave a suitcase behind is not a solution unless its later collection is genuinely part of your plans.

Prepare border documents before leaving town

Chile’s migration service says that some nationalities need prior consular authorization, while others use the ordinary temporary-entry process. Check the rules for your passport rather than copying a traveller’s experience with another nationality. Passport validity, any required visa and documents for children need to be resolved before a remote departure, not during the last vehicle change.

Keep your entry record for Bolivia and complete the required exit and Chilean entry procedures. If you travel in the reverse direction or take a San Pedro round trip, you must separately meet Bolivia’s entry requirements and the requirements for returning to Chile. Guidance on the UK government page is expressly nationality-specific; it is not evidence that all visitors have the same visa terms.

Save your booking, accommodation details, border-transfer contact and travel documents for offline access. Ask the operator which formalities happen at which point and how the next driver identifies you. Assistance with paperwork is useful, but responsibility for admission remains with the authorities and you must keep track of your own documents.

Food declarations and small cash expenses

Chile’s SAG requires a declaration when entering the country and inspection of relevant animal or plant products. That can concern food left in your daypack as well as souvenirs. The declaration itself is free. Ask staff if you are uncertain what to declare; a tour driver’s quick assurance is not a substitute for the official instructions or an inspection.

The SAG pages allow digital or paper procedures, with digital availability depending on the crossing. Do not promise yourself mobile coverage at the border or assume a particular online form works at every checkpoint. Confirm the process for Hito Cajón with the operator and use the official channel appropriate to your arrival.

Carry the currency and denominations the operator recommends for excluded admissions and toilets, while requesting a dated breakdown. A seller’s list of a border charge is not our verification of a government fee. We have not established one current official all-inclusive 2026 cash total, so we do not turn historic entrance amounts into a compulsory universal budget.

Rainy-season substitutions and cancellation terms

The mirror surface, an Incahuasi stop and a complete dry-season circuit are not interchangeable promises. Standing water can alter access and the route through the salar. Ask what the planned substitute is if the island is inaccessible, and whether the border transfer still operates if the landscape route changes. The relevant question is how your booked service is delivered, not whether another traveller saw the mirror last week.

Read both the cancellation deadline and the supplier’s conditions for operational changes. A full refund clause for a cancelled departure may differ from the terms for a running trip with altered stops. Save the selected itinerary and the written explanation of the alternative. If crossing into Chile is essential to your wider journey, ask explicitly what happens if that border connection cannot be provided.

Build an arrival plan that survives a delay

The t801011 description gives a morning border finish and an indicative arrival in San Pedro around midday. Treat that as the operator’s intended program. It is not an official crossing time or a guarantee that you can catch a particular afternoon service from Calama. A separate airport transfer, the onward journey and check-in all need their own margin.

The route also involves nights and outings above the already high salt-flat basin. Ask for the planned sleeping elevations and how the operator responds to illness or a necessary early exit. Arriving immediately from low altitude and relying on a vehicle oxygen bottle is not an acclimatization plan. If you have symptoms, tell the guide promptly and do not keep ascending simply to finish the itinerary.

A less rushed choice may be a night in Uyuni before departure and a flexible night in San Pedro after arrival. These nights are outside the circuit unless stated otherwise. Count them when comparing a one-way expedition with a shorter local tour and separate onward transport.

Questions people ask

Is the onward bus to Calama included?
Do not assume so. The contracted destination may be San Pedro; further transport needs explicit confirmation.
Does a four-day San Pedro departure end in Uyuni?
Not necessarily. The two four-day catalog products are described as returning to San Pedro. Confirm the final town rather than inferring it from the salt-flat visit.
Are all border charges official and fixed?
We have not verified a universal 2026 government cash total. Ask for itemized excluded payments and distinguish admissions, supplier costs and government procedures.
What should I do with food when entering Chile?
Follow SAG declaration and inspection rules for animal and plant products, including relevant food in your luggage. The declaration is free; ask officials if you are uncertain.
Can I book a flight from Calama on the final afternoon?
An estimated San Pedro arrival is not a guaranteed connection. Allow for processing, road delays, the airport transfer and airline check-in, or stay overnight.
