Notes for the journey
Colchani village: salt workshops, market and tours
Colchani gives the salar a human scale: workshops, everyday salt production, an artisan market and accommodation near the edge of the plain. It is worth understanding which kind of stop your tour provides before treating the village as a compulsory shopping break.

The short answer
Colchani is a separate salt-working village near the salar; Uyuni is the usual transport base. Check workshop access and hotel pickup individually.
Village and transport base are different
National tourism material lists Colchani’s museum, workshops, artisan market, salt hotels and ojos de sal. Uyuni provides the town and transport connections used by many excursions. An Uyuni hotel address is not a promise of standard pickup at every Colchani property, so establish the exact location before building an airport or evening connection around it.
Look for a real explanation of the salt work
Ask which part of processing takes place in the workshop you visit and how much time is allocated. A market stop can support purchases without providing an explanation of salt production. We have not verified an official current workshop opening schedule or admission tariff. If a particular museum or process is your main interest, ask about current operation rather than relying on an old itinerary.
Salt hotels are another decision
Tour descriptions can refer to a photo stop at a former hotel, a simple salt hostel inside a circuit or a separately booked hotel near Colchani. These are different services. Check room, meals, heating, transfer and pickup details. Visiting a hotel during the excursion does not include a night there unless the selected product explicitly says so.
Fit the village into the full day
Day products t648675 and t832250 combine Colchani with the Train Cemetery and salar. Compare the time allowed for each stop. If sunset or island walking is the priority, make sure the earlier programme leaves room. Bring cash for agreed purchases and ask permission before close photographs of people or working spaces. The village is a living place rather than an open photography set.
A village visit and a tour starting point are different
Most researched day itineraries reach Colchani after starting in Uyuni. A village name in the title therefore does not confirm pickup at your Colchani hotel. Give the operator the actual address and ask where the group meets, whether a supplement applies and where you finish after sunset. Save that answer with the chosen option.
If you are interested in salt work, ask how the visit is explained and whether there is time to learn rather than only shop. Workshop activity can depend on the day; our historical workshop photographs illustrate the craft, not a live production schedule. Ask before entering working areas or photographing people.
For an independent pause, arrange the return or onward service before leaving your base. We have not verified a comprehensive public transport timetable or a universal taxi tariff for the village. Bring what you need for the rest of the day and keep town exploration separate from the remote salar route: reaching Colchani does not itself supply a vehicle, guide or access plan for driving onto salt.
